           Statehouse Toastmasters  - July 15, 2008

Useful information.

July 15, 2008 Meeting

Member of the Month/ Quarter contest for the 2007-08 Toastmaster year has concluded.  Be sure to attend our August 5 meeting to find out who won!

Toastmaster Robin Barnes encouraged members to take on those seemingly daunting personal tasks with his theme of Do-It-Yourself.  Members also got to see the progress of the Barnes’ home remodel.

A speech is poetry: cadence, rhythm, imagery, sweep! A speech reminds us that words, like children, have the power to make dance the dullest beanbag of a heart.

--  Peggy Noonan (presidential speechwriter)

Table Topics Master Cindy Hunt challenged participants with deceptively simple topics by requiring 4-second pause between each sentence to encourage thoughtful speech, to minimize filler words or sounds and to discourage run-on and fragment sentences.

Table Topics:

New officers received their new leadership manuals this week.   Thank you to Cindy and Lisa for agreeing to perform their roles for another 6 months.  Also, thank you to all of the holdovers and new officers for committing to serve in the 2008/09  Toastmasters Year.   For those officers who served this past year and who did not re-up for another tour of duty, we appreciate all of your efforts, creativity and leadership.   We will especially miss Robin’s knowledge and experience.

Congratulations to Joey Phillippi!  Joey will be leaving Oregon (and Statehouse Toastmasters) to pursue a Masters Degree in Social Work from Northwest Nazarene University.  While we will miss Joey’s sunny personality and “true grit” at our meetings, we are excited that she has this opportunity to pursue a long-held dream.
